Genesis 38

Writer's picture: SofiaSofia

So Judah, the one that sold Joseph into slavery, separated from his other brothers now and chapter 38 is informing us of the evil that is occurring in his own household with his own sons now. My biggest takeaway from this chapter was in verse 10 when it said “what he did was evil in the Lord’s sight...” It’s important to remember that it doesn’t matter what we or another friend or family member thinks is right or wrong, and to only obey what the Lord thinks is right.

Deuteronomy 12:8 - “You are not to do as we are doing here today; everyone is doing whatever seems right in his own eyes.”

What was yours?

I know isn’t it crazy?! People are just having sex with anyone and treating it like nothing! It was definitely different times before Christ came to pour out His spirit on everyone!

Oh okay now that makes sense for the family to step up and have responsibility over the widow thank you for clearing that up, but omg that was definitely a shocker for her to trick Judah like that.😱

Oh yes good point! The husband’s role is to provide security, children, and provisions for his wife, so if the husband dies then the husband’s family assumes the responsibility for the widow to provide for her. Since Judah was not faithful to her in his promise to give her to Shelah for provision, she covered herself so he wouldn’t recognize her and slept with him instead!

Those are good takeaways in this chapter keeping in mind that God always has a plan and a way of things.

In chapter 38 I also noticed that they liked to keep the marriages within the family. For instance Judah’s oldest son dies so he has his next son marry Tamar then he dies and Tamar has to wait until Shelah is of age to be married. However Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

Why was that? Tamar waited all this time for Shelah then she decides to deceive Judah is it because he deceived her first? Why do you think they kept the marriages within the family?

This bible story is always a huge reminder to me that god has a plan. There’s so many moments where things are going down hill but if you keep in your mind that god has a plan those down hill moments all add up and all don’t seem so horrible ♥️
