Genesis 24

So abraham was very old that's why he wanted to make sure his son married a good girl before he passed to basically give him comfort that his son would be taken care of after he was gone. So in those days god wasn't available to everyone because Jesus hadn't come yet to pour His Spirit on us all... back in ancient times the lord was with the descendants of his covenant starting with Adam and Eve through Noah and now we see Abraham carries the covenant with god and he wants to make sure that his son marries someone within his own family to ensure that his descendants will continue living through that covenant with god. Remember they were created perfect in the beginning, in gods image, and the infiltration of sin has caused us to deteriorate as generations continue so back then they didn't need to worry about insest but it does come later in the Bible where the lord gives clearer instruction on that. Abrahams main focus is that his son marries someone of his own family and not of the daughters of the people where he lives because he knows anyone outside of the covenant of the lord would be like a poison to his bloodline. The people of this world are evil if they are not with god. So it's another example of the lord telling us to not marry the people if the world but instead marry someone who is of his promise, who believes in his salvation and is holding to that truth for dear life, or else life will be very hard for you. Separate light from darkness. He doesn't want his son to go back there for the same reason that when lots wife looked back "she turned into a pillar of salt." He said it twice not to take his son back there because the lord brought him to this new land and it would be against gods command to go backwards. Similarly, when god brings you somewhere, it would be against gods command to disobey and return to where you once were, since that came from Him. Keep walking with the lord in faith and never look back. As in verse 50 they said, "this is from the lord; we have no choice in the matter..." the lord tested rebekahs faithfulness too in verse 58 when her family gave her the choice whether to go or not and in all meekness following the command of the lord instead of the comfort of her own home and family she responded "I will go." That meekness brought her closer to god through which she was very blessed later. And as our role model, she took her veil and covered herself.... and Issac loved her. The lord blessed this family when they sought His guidance and worshipped it. It would've been easier to pick any girl around them for his son to marry, they were very wealthy and the town knew they were blessed by god, after all. But God blesses us when we instead ignore the easy route and remain faithful to him by doing what we know is best. They had faith that an angel of the lord would go with them and find them a spouse of the family of his fathers household. Wouldn't we also be blessed if instead of choosing from the lot of men around us as a husband, we only waited for the lord and had faith that His angels will also find us a husband out of our Father's household as well when we are obedient to His ways no matter the inconvenience. Abraham then remarried in the next chapter which we'll read about tomorrow.
